Morpho-sedimentary dynamics associated to dam removal. The Pierre Glissotte dam (central France)

چکیده

The paper emphasizes the main lessons learned from hydromorphological monitoring following removal of a medium-sized dam (7.29 m) located on medium energy gravel bed river over four year period (2015–2019). Pierre Glissotte was previously upper Yonne (Morvan massif), where it an obstacle to sediment continuity and almost completely filled with sand silts. removed in two steps, first July 2015 second October 2017. Several methods were used (topographical surveys, SFM photogrammetry, RFID tracking, hydrological monitoring) characterize adjustments, i.e. nature morpho-sedimentary dynamics, their rates, temporal spatial variations, control mechanisms. results highlight complex nonlinear response relevance regular prolonged monitoring. changing patterns space time, underline vast range uncertainties surrounding this type restoration difficulty involved predicting post-removal hydromorphology around (return pre-dam functioning, no changes, new equilibrium conditions). For instance, up now, study shows that intense dynamics reservoir effective bedload do not necessarily lead changes downstream conditions (bed mobility morphological configuration) shaped under influence dam, thus mitigating success operation.

Will Dam Removal Increase Nitrogen Flux to Estuaries?

To advance the science of dam removal, analyses of functions and benefits need to be linked to individual dam attributes and effects on downstream receiving waters. We examined 7550 dams in the New England (USA) region for possible tradeoffs associated with dam removal. Dam removal often generates improvements for safety or migratory fish passage but might increase nitrogen (N) flux and eutroph...

A Special Section on Dam Removal and River Restoration

H activities have degraded many of the world’s ecosystems, which has created an urgent need for strategies that can restore their ecological integrity. This need is accompanied by many scientific challenges, however. In particular, ecosystems are among the most complex entities in the hierarchy of life, and the successful repair of damaged systems will require a deep understanding of the proces...

Investigating the vulnerability downstream area of Taleghan dam due to dam failure

Due to the immense damage caused by dam failure, especially dams constructed near large cities, it is necessary to consider the breaking phenomena as well as studying and designing different parts of the dam. For this purpose, the hydrograph of the outflow due to dam failure must be identified according to size of the fracture and then flood routing, and flood zone must be determined based on t...
